When is firestop special inspection required?
Firestop special inspection is typically required when the adopted building code applies IBC 1705.17 (or the local equivalent) to fire-resistant joint systems and penetration firestops. The AHJ and the approved construction documents control the trigger on each project.
Who hires the firestop special inspector?
The owner or the owner’s representative usually engages the special inspector so the firm stays independent of the installing contractor. Project teams should confirm local AHJ rules for who may hire the inspector.
What is the difference between ASTM E2174 and ASTM E2393?
ASTM E2174 covers inspection of penetration firestop systems. ASTM E2393 covers inspection of fire-resistant joint systems. Many projects need both where the listings and details require them.
